Leonardo da Vinci, Gay Icon

Sketch by Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519)
We know Leonardo’s love of male figures from the many sketches he made of them preparatory to painting—more males even than of females! At 23 or 24, Leonardo was accused of making love to one of his male models then about 17, although with no witnesses the charge was dismissed. Throughout his life he was rumored to have male lovers, but he understandably remained “closeted,” given sanctions he would have suffered in 15th- and 16th-century Florence. Leonardo’s art remains, in any event, a great monument to humankind in which followers of this blog can take PRIDE.

In the background of Leonardo’s “Virgin of the Rocks” (see below) we see clearly the rocks as metaphor—the shape and position of an erect phallus and testicles and, if you look closely, others in the background. What message is Leonardo sending us?
